Gravity Signals Manager Guide: Use Patterns as Questions, Not Conclusions

Understand manager-only Gravity Signals, combine evidence across SOPs and training, and investigate before acting.

What a Gravity Signal is

A Gravity Signal is an observed pattern that may deserve management attention. It is not proof of misconduct, intent, competency, lack of competency, qualification, or readiness for promotion.

Gravity rule: A Gravity Signal is an indicator, not a conclusion.

Examples of what Signals may help a manager notice

  • Several employees are struggling with the same knowledge-check material.
  • Questions or possible-error reports are clustering around one procedure.
  • A procedure may need a clearer quick reference or documentation update.
  • A required training or acknowledgment follow-up may need manager attention.
  • An employee may have a legitimate cross-training or development interest worth discussing.

Each example can have more than one explanation. The manager must verify the circumstances before acting.

Why Gravity Signals stays manager-only

The purpose is to observe natural operating and learning patterns. If employees are told the exact internal logic that creates or avoids a Signal, behavior can change simply because the measurement exists. An employee might avoid rereading an SOP because they worry it looks like confusion, stop asking questions because they fear an alert, or deliberately use material to try to create a development Signal.

Employees should use Gravity to learn and work better—not manage an internal score or flag. Appropriate general notice may still explain that system activity can be recorded for operational, security, training, and recordkeeping purposes.

Signals is optional

The restaurant controls whether Gravity Signals is enabled. Managers can turn the feature off entirely, disable categories, or disable individual Signal types. Turning Signals off stops manager-side Signal calculation and interpretation; required operational records such as training completion, acknowledgments, quiz records, and employee questions continue normally.

Interpret before acting

Inside the manager Build Room, the Gravity Signal Interpretation Map gives managers possible system explanations, possible people/training explanations, what to verify next, and what not to assume for each supported Signal type. That detailed interpretation tool remains manager-only.
