Restaurant Pre-Shift Meeting Checklist: A 10-Minute Manager Routine

A practical restaurant pre-shift meeting checklist for staffing, reservations, menu changes, safety, service priorities, goals, and employee communication.

A good pre-shift meeting is short, specific, and useful. It should reduce uncertainty before the restaurant gets busy—not become a speech employees stop listening to.

1. State the expected business

  • Share expected covers or sales range, reservations, large parties, events, promotions, weather impacts if material, and the likely rush window.

2. Confirm staffing and ownership

  • Name station assignments, breaks, trainers, manager zones, who owns guest recovery, and any temporary coverage adjustments.

3. Cover menu and operational changes

  • Review 86 items, specials, recipe or allergy communication changes, equipment limitations, POS issues, and any standards that changed since the last shift.

4. Name one service focus

  • Choose one or two behaviors the team can actually execute and managers can observe—for example greeting time, beverage follow-up, ticket communication, or clean handoffs.

5. Invite useful questions

  • Give employees a real opportunity to raise missing information, readiness problems, or concerns before service begins. A pre-shift should improve the manager’s awareness too.
Gravity principle: Context before conclusions. Evidence before judgment. People before percentages.
